Foundation tests kids for diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that often goes undetected, posing a very serious health risk for the unsuspecting and undiagnosed individual.

There are 18.2 million people in the United States, or 6.3 percent of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 13 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 5.2 million people (nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease, according to the American Diabetes Association.

Locally, the Cathedral City-based Foundation for Diabetes Education has called the community's attention to the importance of testing, detection and treatment. Over the last several years, the nonprofit foundation has tested every kid in middle school through high school - in all three school districts. The result: 125 cases of diabetes that had previously gone undetected were discovered.

The foundation is now embarking on another aspect in the continuum of diabetic care. The FDE will soon begin arranging for uninsured and economically-challenged individuals to receive a free supply of all diabetes medications that their doctor prescribes - including insulin. The FDE will also provide non-prescription supplies. All free, for all those in need.

The FDE's philanthropic and humanitarian efforts are making a positive impact on the quality of life in our community.

For more information, please call 324-4445, or visit the foundation's Web site: www.thefde.com.

Online golf event will assist diabetes sufferers

The Foundation for Diabetes Education, based in Cathedral City, will be the beneficiary of The First-Ever World-Wide On-Line Charity Golf Tournament, which begins Sunday.

The foundation helps uninsured diabetes patients obtain supplies, including insulin, for free.

Sponsorships for the online tournament will start in the Coachella Valley. Local sponsors will award prizes to a percentage of donors, and all donations will go to The Foundation for Diabetes Education, according to a release from the foundation.

A new tournament starts each month, and promotional events are planned in 26 other cities. As other diabetes-related nonprofit organizations come on board as beneficiaries, donors will still be able to designate that their contributions go to The Foundation for Diabetes Education.

Tournament participants can play anytime and can watch and chat online as others take their shots.

To download the game for free, visit http://www.egolf4diabetes.com. For more information about The Foundation for Diabetes Education or diabetes, visit thefde.com.

The Cathedral City-based Foundation for Diabetes Education is hosting an online charity golf tournament starting at midnight Thursday.

Donations go to the foundation, which assists uninsured diabetes patients.

The event runs from Thursday until midnight September 5.

Participants need to go to http://www.egolf4diabetes.com to enter.

While players can take part in the online tournament for free, prizes will be awarded with a $22 donation.  Prizes include hot air ballooning and rides on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and there are 10 prizewinners for every 200 playing contributors.

Those who play in the tournament can see their opponents take each shot, hole by hole.  To learn the game, there are unlimited nine-hole practice plays and three free tournament plays where the best score remains.

A $22 donation to the foundation automatically gets donors two $25 dining coupons from restaurant.com that includes thousands of restaurants.

The Foundation for Diabetes Education also provides education and materials to children with diabetes.

Sherm Scheff, founding director of the nonprofit organization, learned he had diabetes in 1998.

"The Coachella Valley has a tremendous number of children who have had diabetes or who are going to get diabetes," Scheff said in a recent telephone interview.  He said in the Latino community, diabetes runs high because of genetics, a poor diet and lack of exercise.

To inform the community and children about diabetes, Scheff's foundation provided testing in Coachella Valley schools.

"There were a lot of kids with Type 2 diabetes, which is normally an adult type of things," he said.

After testing and informing so many people, Scheff said he became interested in getting diabetes supplies to children who are poor or have no insurance.

"With the deep pockets we have in this area, we should be able to raise money" to help these children get supplies, he said.
